Creating Confident Preservice Teachers for EL Students in the Changing World

English Learners (ELs) represent the most diverse group of students and a student population that has increased significantly in United States. These demand well-equipped teachers who have adequate preparation pedagogical tools to meet their needs. This research examined preservice teachers’ (N=77) perceptions preparedness efficacy beliefs from three different educator programs using mixed-method study collected data 30-item survey as well candidates’ narrative responses about experiences for working with ELs. Findings included statistical differences based on program they were enrolled (e.g., bachelor’s or master’s) whether receiving an ESL/ESOL certification part initial preparation. Moreover, reported ESL coursework, specific workshops honed into pedagogies, field-placement opportunities interact EL influential improving abilities confidence classroom. findings suggest continual need teacher education embed related coursework placing clinical settings influence effective pedagogies success classroom beyond.
